A Rare Opportunity to Own Part of Pub History

At the ripe old age of 93, Mary Crawley, reputed to be the oldest publican and Licensee is finally hanging up her bar apron and reluctantly selling the iconic Tattersall's Hotel at Barringun.

The Hotel is situated in the small village of Barringun, on the New South Wales/Queensland border 137 km. north of Bourke and 122 km. south of Cunnamulla and comes with approximately 87 ha. freehold land. Barringun is essentially the junction of the Kidman Way and Matilda Highway one of the busiest and well travelled traffic routes of western NSW. The fully sealed highway is very popular with tourists as well as being a major truck thoroughfare with in excess of 200,000 vehicles travelling through Barringun in any one year.

The outback hotel, which was first established in 1884 was the last of 5 hotels originally built in the village and is the only one that remains. The Hotel has had five owners since opening with the current owner taking over in 1977. Not only is the publican, Mary Crawley a well known character but the hotel also has a reputation with the both of them featuring in many publications including but not limited to "The Outback" Magazine, "Australian Motorcycle Magazine", "Australian Geographic" and the just published "Pub Yarns" by Colin Whelan as well as numerous newspaper and internet articles. A sign just outside of Barringun boasts that it is the last pub in N.S.W. Some of the Hotels more famous patrons include the Scottish Bush Poet, Will Ogilvie and his friend Breaker Morant who frequented the pub during their time working in the district. In more recent times, Jockey, Malcolm "Miracle" Johnston and Peter Moody, trainer of the legendary race horse "Black Caviar", regularly called in to see their personal friend, Mary. Actors, Russell Crowe, Simon Westaway and Robert Mammone also stayed a night back in 1998.

The hotel is a fine example of a bush pub with its verandahs, 16 foot ceilings, unusual shaped bar and the original 1930's, timber coolroom. One room was specifically built to house a full size Alcock and Co. Billiard table which was delivered to Barringun by Bullock Dray. This Billiard table remains in this room and is included in the sale complete with all accessories including Framed Rules, Life Pool Score Board, cue racks and credenzas. It is extremely rare to find a table like this complete with all original accessories.

The hotel complex also includes what was once the Police Station from Wooroorooka. The building was moved from Queensland to Barringun and was used as the Post Office and Telephone exchange until the 1960's. The original, red public telephone box is still on site. A large, 4 bay machinery shed with adjoining tractor storage is also included as are several out buildings including meat house and ablution blocks.

Recent improvements include Partial roof replacement, new front verandah flooring, repaired side verandah trusses and new electrical wiring in the bar, store, taproom, billiard room, front lounge, four bedrooms and office as well as 3 new internal fuse boxes. The carpet in tap room, halls, dining room, 3 bedrooms, office and front lounge have been replaced as well as new commercial vinyl flooring in kitchen.

The sale of this property not only provides the purchaser with the actual buildings but also items of interest and historical value. Inclusions worth mentioning are a large Enfield Grandfather Clock located in the bar which was the trophy for a horse race back in the
1930's along with other racing memorabilia from the Barringun Jockey Club dating back to the 1880's. There are also photographs of the Hotel, Barringun and The Tinnenburra Shearing Shed from 1880's to 1920's as well Blacksmith items. A list of inclusions is available on request from the selling agents.

The opportunity to capitalise on the growing tourism industry is immense. The vast history of the hotel, its current owner, patrons and the village of Barringun itself as well as the surrounding district is enough to set up your own museum. Accommodation options ranging from Hotel rooms to camping grounds and caravan park are also a possibility. The only limitation is your imagination.

Mary Crawley is and has always been a gracious, lady publican and both her and her family are keen to find the right people to carry on the tradition and preserve the rich history of this wonderful and renowned hotel.

The Tattersall's Hotel is being sold via "Expressions of Interest" and all submissions must be in writing, in the correct format and received by the agent before 28th September, 2017. No offers will be accepted after this date.
